A scrap yard is one of the hardest commercial properties to secure, and the reason has nothing to do with cameras. It is the business model. Valuable material sits outdoors across acres of open ground, and the site is designed for constant traffic — peddler vehicles at the scale, roll-off trucks, commercial accounts, vendors, mobile handlers and loaders moving piles all day long. Movement on the property is normal. That is exactly what makes unauthorized movement so hard to spot.

Compare that to a warehouse. A warehouse has doors, and a door is a decision point: either someone is authorized to open it or they are not. A recycling yard has a fence line, a scale house, a gate, and a hundred places where a person or a truck can be in the wrong spot for a perfectly ordinary-looking reason. Detection has to be built around behavior, location, and time of day rather than around a locked opening.

The operational consequence for a yard is twofold. First, your own inventory is a target — especially segregated nonferrous. Second, you are a regulated buyer, which means your gate and scale-house records are part of your legal exposure, not just your loss-prevention program. Fence-line breaches

Cut, pried, or lifted fence panels along the least-visible side of the property — usually the rear or a boundary shared with woods, rail, or another industrial parcel. The breach itself often happens on a separate visit from the theft.

Catalytic converters and vehicle parts

Salvage and auto-recycling yards carry rows of vehicles that are effectively a parts warehouse with no walls. Converters, batteries, wheels, and harnesses come off fast and leave in a trunk.

Equipment, fuel, and attachments

Loaders, forklifts, material handlers, torches, generators, batteries, and diesel. Slower to remove, but a stolen or vandalized handler stops the yard from running the next morning.

Internal and transactional loss

Recording a Theft vs. Detecting One

This is the distinction that decides whether a security budget produces a result. Most yards already own cameras and already have footage of the incidents that hurt them. The footage arrives the next morning, the material is gone, and the clip either identifies someone or it does not. Recording is an evidence strategy. It has value — for insurance, for police reports, for internal accountability — but it does not prevent the loss it documents.

Detection is a different design goal. Detection means something on the property recognizes a person or vehicle where they should not be, at a time when nobody should be there, and puts a human on it within seconds. That human can issue a live talk-down, confirm what is happening before calling police, and give responding officers a live description instead of a burglar-alarm dispatch with no detail. The difference is measured in whether the truck leaves loaded.

Fixed and PTZ cameras

Fixed cameras own defined zones — a gate, a bunker, a shop door, a stretch of fence. PTZ cameras cover distance and let an operator zoom in on a detection to confirm what it is. On a large yard the practical pattern is fixed cameras for the zones that must never go unwatched, plus PTZ for reach, never PTZ alone. A PTZ pointed at the rear yard is not covering the scale house.

AI person and vehicle detection

Classic motion detection is unusable on a recycling site. Tarps move, debris blows, birds land on bales, and headlights sweep the fence from the road. Object-classification analytics that distinguish a person or a vehicle from environmental motion are what make after-hours alerting practical. Rules should be scoped by zone and by schedule: a person in the nonferrous bunker at 2 a.m. is an event; the same person there at 10 a.m. is an employee.

License Plate Recognition at entrances and exits

LPR is unusually valuable at a scrap yard because vehicles are the theft mechanism and because the business already has a regulatory duty to know who sold what. A plate captured on entry and again on exit creates a searchable record you can pull by plate rather than by scrubbing hours of footage. It also supports allow-lists for known commercial accounts and BOLO-style flags for a vehicle tied to a prior incident, so a repeat visitor is recognized at the gate instead of after the fact.

Thermal imaging

Thermal sensors detect heat signatures rather than reflected light, which makes them useful along unlit fence lines, across large open yards, and in fog, smoke, or heavy weather. Thermal is a detection tool, not an identification tool — it tells you a person is crossing the boundary, and a visible or PTZ camera then provides the face, the vehicle, and the evidence. Pairing the two is how large unlit properties get early warning without lighting the entire parcel.

24/7 live video monitoring and audio talk-down

Monitoring is what converts a detection into an outcome. An operator verifies the alert, and if the activity is unauthorized, issues a live voice announcement over on-site speakers describing what the person is doing and where they are standing. That specificity is the point — a generic recorded warning is background noise, while a live operator naming the intruder's location communicates that a human is watching in real time. If the person does not leave, the operator escalates with a verified call to law enforcement.

Solar power, cellular connectivity, and mobility

Yards are not wired for cameras in the places that need them most. Trenching conduit across a working material yard is disruptive and expensive, and any fixed install becomes obsolete the moment the pile layout changes. Capturing Evidence That Is Actually Usable

A large share of scrap yard camera footage fails at the moment it matters. Not because the camera was off, but because it was never configured for identification. Detection distance, mounting height, lighting, shutter speed, and retention all decide whether a clip supports a police report or just proves that something happened.

  • Set an identification purpose per camera. Decide in advance whether each camera is for detection (someone is there), recognition (which of my employees), or identification (a stranger's face or a plate). The pixel density and lens choice follow from that decision, not the other way around.
  • Shoot plates with a dedicated camera. A general overview camera at the gate will not resolve a plate at night. Plate capture needs its own angle, its own exposure settings, and a shutter fast enough to freeze a moving vehicle.
  • Light for cameras, not for the parking lot. Even illumination beats bright pools. Uneven lighting creates blown highlights and black shadows in the same frame, and a face in that shadow is gone.
  • Cover the exit, not only the entrance. What leaves the property is the loss. A plate on the way out is often the stronger record.
  • Verify retention against how you discover loss. If inventory discrepancies surface on a weekly or monthly cycle, thirty days of retention is a floor, not a luxury.
  • Test search, not just recording. The practical measure of a system is whether you can pull the right clip by time, zone, or plate in minutes.
  • Re-audit after every yard reconfiguration. A new bale wall or bunker can blind a camera that worked fine the week before.

Where Mobile Surveillance Fits in a Recycling Operation

Mobile surveillance is not a replacement for a well-designed fixed system at the scale house and the office. It is the answer to the parts of a yard that fixed infrastructure serves badly: the rear boundary with no power, an outdoor storage area that moved this quarter, a fence line that has been cut twice, a new material pad, or a temporary overflow yard leased for a seasonal volume spike.

A Practical Rollout for a Working Yard

  • Map loss to location. List the last twelve months of incidents and mark where each one started, not where it was discovered. The pattern almost always concentrates in two or three zones.
  • Fix identity at the gate first. Entrance and exit plate capture plus a driver-facing overview gives every future investigation a starting point and supports your transaction records.
  • Harden the nonferrous zone next. Dedicated cameras, after-hours rules, and a second physical barrier around the highest-value material.
  • Put detection on the perimeter, not only the interior. Fence-line coverage is what buys you response time.
  • Add live monitoring to the zones where intervention changes the outcome. Not every camera needs an operator behind it — the high-value and perimeter zones usually do.
  • Close the remaining blind spots with a mobile unit. Rear yard, temporary areas, and anywhere permanent infrastructure is impractical.
